The Truth About Cleansing

The Truth About Cleansing

How many of you put health goals on your New Year’s resolutions list? Or allowed yourself to binge over Christmas with the promise of a good cleansing in the new year?

As we get towards the end of the year and closer to January, we are seeing mentions of detoxes, cleanses, Veganuary, and dry-Jan in our online spaces.

However, the growth in popularity of detoxes and cleanses over the last few years has led to a backlash. I am sure you have all come across articles on why you shouldn’t cleanse?

Cleanses have got some bad press, earning a reputation for being unhealthy and even unsafe. This is partly to do with some unscrupulous businesses making promises that their ‘shakes’ and ‘supplements’ will change your lives. And partly because we are living in an age where we get a lot of mixed messages and conflicting advice on health and how we should be eating.

A ‘cleanse’ has become synonymous with all-liquid diets, expensive supplements, and short-term deprivation for short-term gains.

Like everything, there will always be a few unscrupulous people out there. The key is to get good quality information and support from a reputable place that you trust. Do your research!

In this blog I will debunk some myths and give you my take on what makes a good cleanse.

A cleanse doesn’t have to involve only drinking liquid for a week, or cutting out food all together. If you detox in a healthy, supported way, you can achieve lasting results in weight management, energy gain and full-body health.

Why Cleanse?

The body is pretty amazing and is very good at healing itself when we feed it with the right nutrients and minerals. First, we need to give a little attention to the major organs which detox the body. They are the liver, kidneys, bowels and skin.

If we put too much strain on these organs, then they won’t be able to get rid of all the toxins accumulated. When the toxins remain in the bloodstream, they can lead to a whole variety of problems.

A cleanse is a fantastic way to give your body a reset and reboot. It helps to eliminate those toxins, helping the major organs to regenerate and recover. Done properly you will end up feeling amazing, with an abundance of energy, glowing skin and sustainable weight loss.

However, there are a few misconceptions about what a cleanse is. The following are four myths you may have heard about detoxing, which understandably, may cause you to be hesitant to give it a go.

Keep reading to find out the truth behind these myths and why cleansing might be just what your body is craving

Myth # 1: You won’t enjoy anything you’re eating while on a detox

While you might have to eliminate certain foods that you enjoy, cleansing isn’t all about eating lettuce with a drizzle of olive oil. There are many delicious recipes that you can prepare using healthy ingredients that not only taste amazing, but will nourish and cleanse your body.

The best part is, many of them don’t involve any fancy ingredients and can be prepared easily, even if you are a novice. In fact, my cleanse participants always discover new foods and recipes that they absolutely love that have become staples in their diets long after the cleanse ends.

Myth #2: You’ll be constantly hungry while detoxing

While you might end up consuming fewer calories while following a cleanse, you shouldn’t feel deprived or hungry. Going on an extremely low-calorie diet can actually disrupt your hormones and metabolism, making your body less efficient in the long run.

Everyone’s caloric needs are different, so a cleanse should never dictate how many calories you consume. By consuming whole foods that provide you with the right nutrients, you help cleanse your body while feeling satisfied. I don’t believe in diets or restrictive cleanses, as many find them hard to stick to. It always amazes my clients that they never feel hungry during my cleanses.

Myth #3:  You need to do an all-liquid detox to remove toxins from your body

It’s one way of doing it, yes, but if not done correctly, these types of cleanses can backfire. Not only do people often gain the weight back as soon as the detox ends, but such restrictive eating for a long period of days can be detrimental to your health.

They can increase the risk of bingeing, disordered eating, and an unhealthy preoccupation with food. And that preoccupation with food can actually lead to weight gain.

An effective cleanse will include a variety of whole foods to help nourish your body and produce long-term results.

Myth #4: Cleanses are just a way for people to make money on expensive supplements

Supplements involved in a detox should be just that, a supplementary part of the program, not the primary source of your nutrition. During a cleanse, you should get most of your vitamins and minerals from whole-food sources.

Supplements are ok when recommended to help your body make the most of the nutrients it receives from these foods. For example, by including probiotics in your diet, you help your body produce vitamins, absorb minerals, and remove toxins from the body.

Cleansing is also an incredibly effective way to identify if you have any food sensitivities, balance your hormones, and establish healthy habits for the long term.

I’ve worked with cleanse participants who not only have lost weight and kept it off, but who have also seen their energy levels skyrocket, their skin clear up and even their allergies disappear.
