We’re all unique—from our genetic make-up to the way we see the world, there is no one like you. Yet we walk around comparing ourselves to others, wondering why they look a certain way, and we don’t, despite putting the effort into our diets and exercise. We try things recommended by others because they worked for them, and are left puzzled when they don’t work for us.
So, what does this ‘uniqueness’ actually mean when it comes to building longevity in our nutrition and wellness journey?
In today’s online world, health and wellness advice is everywhere. One scroll through social media and you’re bombarded with wellness advice — fasting windows, collagen powders, greens supplements, biohacking tools, and five-step morning routines that promise better sleep, sharper focus, or glowing skin.
It can feel overwhelming at best and lead to inactivity at worst. If you’re not doing all of this, you may feel you’re missing out or doing something wrong.
Yet your body isn’t an algorithm. It’s a complex, ever-changing system that needs tried and tested individual care, not blanket trends.
What works beautifully for someone else may leave you feeling tired, bloated, anxious, or simply unwell. I’ve been working as a nutritional therapist for over 16 years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: health isn’t one-size-fits-all.

The problem with supplements
The supplement industry, a multi-billion-dollar global market, often promotes its products as universal solutions to a wide range of health issues. Like every other profit-growing entity, they use slick marketing, influencer endorsements, and vague health claims. Supplements are frequently portrayed as essential for everyone, regardless of individual health status or needs.
However, this “one-size-fits-all” approach often oversimplifies complex health matters and can mislead you into thinking supplements are magic fixes rather than complementary tools. One person may feel calmer and more focused when taking ashwagandha, a herb often used to support stress and anxiety, while another might experience side effects like headaches, digestive upset, or simply feeling “off.”
Creatine might support lean muscle and energy for one client but cause bloating or digestive discomfort in someone else. Just because someone on Instagram swears by it doesn’t mean it’s right for your body, especially if you’re on medication, managing a condition, or dealing with stress or fatigue.
This doesn’t mean supplements are bad – there are some very good products out there, you just need to do your research and get the right advice that’s right for you.
What about food?
Even with food, we’re different. Some of us thrive on animal-based proteins, others feel lighter with plant-based meals. Some feel energised by three solid meals a day, others benefit from gentle intermittent fasting. Your age, your genetics, hormones, gut health, and lifestyle all influence what’s right for you. Even when it comes to whole foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes, often hailed as universally healthy, the truth is more nuanced. While these foods offer essential nutrients, not everyone responds to them in the same way. For instance, someone with certain allergies, digestive issues, or metabolic conditions might not benefit from the same diet that works for others.
Getting the foundations right
There are, of course, some foundational pillars we can all benefit from. Things like regular movement, drinking enough water, getting enough protein (especially after 40), good quality sleep, blood sugar balance, and reducing ultra-processed foods. These are backed by science. But even how you apply those basics can look different from person to person.
This is why, if you’re making significant lifestyle and dietary choices to transform your health, it’s so important to work with qualified professionals. As a nutritional therapist, my role is not just to hand you a plan, but to listen to your history, understand your symptoms, and build something with you that reflects your individuality.
We live in an era of information overload, and while it’s amazing to have health, nutrition and wellness content at our fingertips, it’s also easy to feel overwhelmed, confused, or pressured to try things that don’t align with your needs. That’s why I always encourage my clients, and anyone reading this, to pause before jumping into anything you see online. Ask yourself: Is this right for me? Is it safe for me? And do your research!
Because professional, qualified advice matters, and science matters. But most of all, you matter. Your preferences, your lifestyle, and your values are all part of the nutrition and wellness puzzle. It’s about learning what truly supports you.
How to start on your Nutrition and Wellness journey
If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few simple first steps:
- Begin with self-awareness. Pay attention to how you feel after meals, your energy levels throughout the day, your sleep patterns, mood, digestion, and cravings.
- Keep a simple journal for a few days. No pressure, just honest notes. It helps you connect the dots and begin tuning in to your body’s signals.
- Resist the urge to overhaul everything at once – that never works! Small, consistent changes over time are often the most powerful.
- And if you’re feeling lost in the noise, reach out to a qualified professional who can help guide you, not just based on trends, but based on you.
The most effective wellness plan is the one that’s built with you, not one that’s copied from someone else.
You deserve a personalised, evidence-based approach that feels good in your body and fits into your life, because that’s where real, lasting change begins. If this resonates, let’s talk!
