It’s time for a different approach to managing our weight.
If you’ve read any of my previous blogs, you’ll know I’m not into dieting. They just don’t work long-term. I’ve worked with so many women who’ve tried all sorts of diets, only to find they put the weight back on again soon after losing it. This is known as yo-yo dieting and is not sustainable.
Fad diets and extreme exercise regimens might promise rapid weight loss, but they rarely address the bigger picture of health.
We’ve been misguided by the dieting industry because weight management is about more than just shedding pounds. It’s about achieving overall well-being and changing habits so you can sustain your ideal weight. It’s also about finding that balance so you don’t feel as though you’re denying yourself anything.
In this post, we’ll explore a holistic approach to managing your weight so you can achieve a more balanced, healthier, and happier life.

Understanding Holistic Weight Management
This approach considers more than just the weight we want to lose. It looks at our lifestyle and mindset and provides a balanced and sustainable way forward.
The Mind-Body Connection
A holistic approach to weight management recognizes the intricate link between our mental and physical health. Emotions, stress, and mindset all play significant roles in our relationship with food and exercise. Our relationship with food starts when we are babies and aside from eating for hunger, we use food to comfort, ease boredom and celebrate. You can find out more about emotional eating here.
Sustainable Lifestyle Changes
Instead of quick fixes, a holistic approach focuses on sustainable lifestyle changes that support long-term health and weight management. It’s not just about losing weight, but maintaining it. We’re all different, so it makes sense that certain strict diets are not right for everyone. Our bodies also change over time, what we need in our twenties will be different to our needs when pregnant or raising a family and again when we are in our 40s and 50s. A holistic approach takes into account our lifestyle, mindset, mental health and stage of life we’re in.
Nourishing Your Body
Holistic weight management prioritises nourishing our body with nutrient-dense foods rather than restrictive diets. It emphasizes the quality of what we eat, not just the quantity. When we start to really focus on this, we become a lot more aware of the choices we’re making.
Balancing Exercise
Exercise is essential, but a holistic approach doesn’t mean gruelling workouts at 6am. It’s about finding physical activities we enjoy and incorporating them into our routine for overall fitness and stress relief.

Here are some of the ways you can take a holistic approach to weight management.
1. Mindful Eating
Practising mindful eating involves paying attention to what we eat, savouring each bite, and listening to our body’s hunger and fullness cues. This encourages a healthier relationship with food. Much snacking happens when we are not paying attention when we are doing something else – like working or watching TV. By being more mindful, we become conscious of what we’re eating and make better choices.
2. Emotional Well-being
Managing stress, anxiety, and emotional eating is crucial to understanding how it affects our eating habits. Firstly identify how emotional eating affects you, then look for ways to manage it. Techniques like meditation, yoga, or counselling can help address emotional triggers for overeating or eating the wrong foods.
3. Balanced Nutrition
A well-rounded diet includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. This provides the necessary nutrients for energy and overall health. A good place to start is to get into the habit of cooking from scratch using fresh ingredients. Try and get as many different types of nutrient-rich foods into your week as you can – that way you will be getting everything you need.
4. Portion Control
Portion control is about eating in moderation, not deprivation. It allows you to enjoy your favourite foods while still managing your weight. It’s about bringing balance into your eating habits, if you are cooking from scratch and eating nutrient-rich foods most of the week, it’s okay to have fries or dessert, just a smaller amount.
5. Regular Exercise
Finding physical activities you enjoy, whether it’s dancing, hiking, swimming, or walking, means you are more likely to stick with the activity. Consistency is key, and exercise should be a source of joy, not punishment. Finding creative ways to get more movement into your day is another great way to start. See if you can find ways to easily add more walking to your day.
6. Getting into a Good Sleep Routine
Adequate sleep is essential for weight management. Lack of sleep can disrupt hormones related to hunger and appetite. Get yourself into a regular sleep routine by turning off screens, dimming lights and winding down before bed. Aim to go to bed at the same time each night and wake up at the same time each morning.
7. Seeking Support
Seeking support from friends, family, a health coach like myself, or a support group can make a significant difference when setting out to achieve health goals. It can help keep you motivated and accountable and can make it more fun.
8. Self-compassion
This is the most important part! Be kind to yourself on your weight management journey. Avoid self-criticism, negative self-talk and comparison. All of this can hinder progress. Be aware that you will face setbacks, but that’s no reason to give up!
Managing weight holistically is about embracing a balanced approach to health that considers the mind and body.
It’s a journey toward overall well-being, not a destination reached by following a rigid diet or extreme exercise routine. By focusing on mindful eating, emotional well-being, balanced nutrition, and regular exercise, you can achieve sustainable weight management and a healthier and happier life. Remember that it’s about progress, not perfection and that each step toward holistic health is a step toward a brighter future.
