If You’ve Already Given Up in January, Read This

Happy New Year! How has it started for you? I feel quietly optimistic myself, yet I did start January taking a step back – easing myself into the new year after a very busy December. Yet this was also intentional. As a health coach, I feel the pressure to talk about health goals and support my clients in their New Year’s ‘transformations’. But it didn’t feel aligned this year. Quite frankly, come 1st January, we are bombarded with messages telling us to start again, do better, eat cleaner, train harder, and become a new version of ourselves.

It comes from every direction – social media, emails, challenges, detoxes, plans, promises – even in your favourite clothes shop, showcasing their workout range in the window. It’s the same messages repeated year after year, often louder and more extreme than before – because if we’re honest, there’s a lot of money to be made from it.

I knew I didn’t want to add to the noise or pressure at a time when many already feel tired, overwhelmed and guilty. I didn’t want to contribute to the same cycle that repeats itself every year. Because what I notice, both with clients and more generally, is that by mid-January, many have already failed to get going, or quietly given up. Not because they don’t care or lack willpower, but because the goal they set or what they started was simply too much.

When life returns to its normal pace, new routines feel hard to maintain. You miss the morning run because you must be at work early for a meeting. You’re exhausted at the end of the day, and the weather is challenging. There’s nothing wrong, yet that feeling many get is one of failure.

This is the moment I want to speak to.

January New Year Resolutions

Why most people give up by mid-January

Every January, the same pattern plays out. Coming out of one of the busiest and most indulgent times of the year, many people start with extremes. I totally understand the feeling and the need to impose strict rules, cutting everything out at once, and adding in intense training routines with the expectation of rapid change.

For a short time, adrenaline and the endorphins exercise provides carry them through. But once work, family, stress, and everyday responsibilities kick in, those plans begin to crumble.

This is especially true after the age of forty. That’s because our bodies are less tolerant of extremes. Our mind might think we’re still in our twenties or thirties and can take on anything, but the reality is, recovery takes longer, and stress has a greater impact.

Hormones, sleep, digestion, and energy all play a role in how we feel. What once felt manageable can suddenly feel exhausting, and the motivation to put yourself through it fades. It’s natural to then assume there’s something wrong when in reality, the approach was never designed to last.

If you have already given up, this matters

If you have already let go of your January plans, it’s important to know you have not failed and you aren’t behind. You’ve still got a whole year ahead of you.

What you’ve got is the wrong strategy.

At this stage, jumping back into another extreme plan will not help, nor will punishing yourself with restriction. And waiting for another perfect Monday to get going usually leads to the same outcome.

None of these approaches support long term health.

What to do instead

We collectively like markers in the year that signify a starting point, January, September, and Mondays are all common places to ‘begin afresh’. Yet this is also where we can come unstuck, giving up all too quickly when things don’t work out.

It’s time for a mindset change – these times in the year are arbitrary. You can start any time, any day. The key is about gently returning to a rhythm that works for you and your life.

That might mean eating regular, nutritious meals without overthinking them. Moving your body in ways that feel supportive rather than exhausting. Going for daily walks. Strength training a few times a week instead of every day. Getting longer and better sleep. Drinking a little less alcohol and a little more water because you notice it helps you feel better.

These choices may seem small, but they are powerful because they are practical and achievable. Consistency does not come from intensity. It stems from daily habits that you can continue even when life feels busy or tiring.

Why this approach actually works

Sustainable habits do not rely on constant motivation. They survive stressful weeks, social events, and periods where our energy is lower. Yet over time, they quietly improve how you feel. Your energy becomes more stable, your mood improves, your strength builds, and your digestion settles. Then, from that place, you can ask yourself – what else do I need? What can I improve on?

Adding in another healthy habit at this point is more likely to be sustainable. Upping the amount of vegetables on your plate, adding in one more weekly exercise session, won’t feel hard when your foundations are strong. This is how health is built and maintained.

January is not over, and neither is the year

Mid-January is often where real change begins. Not the loud kind, but the grounded kind.

If you’ve already stepped away from your January intentions, you’re not starting from zero. You are simply being invited to choose a gentler, more realistic way forward. It’s ok to reassess and reset in a way that works.

It’s time to return, calmly and consistently, to habits that support you in real life.

And that is more than enough.
