I love the winter- itâs my favourite season as thereâs something about its quiet, introspective nature that I deeply love. Yet, along comes spring and with it the longer days and sunshine warming the earth and our bodies. Iâm always awed by the natural world quietly unfolding around me, and then suddenly everything just springs into life! It is a season of renewal, rebirth, and gentle awakening.Â
In the UK, spring officially begins on March 21st, yet for many of us, the shift is felt more gradually as the lighter mornings increase, we awaken to birdsong, and a sense of possibility stirs within.
When we live in alignment with the seasons, we have an opportunity to nurture our minds and bodies. This is especially so for women over 40, where each season brings with it a natural invitation to pause, reset, and realign with our health and inner vitality.
Letting Go of Winter
Winter often brings a sense of hibernation – denser meals, slower rhythms, and less time outdoors and socialising. Yet for some, the colder, darker days can contribute to a low mood, leading to emotional eating as a coping mechanism.Â
Then, as spring arrives, and we welcome the lightness and energy that comes with it, weâre offered a chance to gently shed what no longer serves us, be that in our kitchens, our minds, our bodies or our daily routines.
It can feel as if weâre âwaking upâ from the slumber of winterâ the enhanced hours of daylight and sunshine mean our circadian and circannual rhythms (our bodyâs internal clocks) shift.
As daylight increases, there are noticeable changes in our bodies:
- Pineal gland: Less melatonin (the sleep hormone) is produced due to more daylight, which can lead to feeling more alert and energised.
- Hypothalamus: This part of the brain controls our circadian rhythms and is strongly influenced by light and darkness, and keeps track of time. As springtime brings more daylight, our hypothalamus gets the message that itâs time to shift gears. This positively affects our mood, appetite, and sleep. More daylight signals our body to reduce melatonin and boost serotonin (the feel-good hormone).
- Skin: Becomes more active with vitamin D synthesis due to sun exposure.
- Liver and metabolism:Â As we become more active and spend more time outdoors in spring, there can be a natural boost to energy and metabolism. While the evidence is still emerging, some research suggests seasonal shifts may influence how our body processes energy. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, spring is also associated with the Liver, symbolising growth, detoxification, and renewal.
In holistic traditions like Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, and energetic healing systems, specific organs and energies become more active or sensitive in the spring.
Spring is associated with the Liver. The Liver in Traditional Chinese Medicine governs the flow of Qi (energy) and is linked to growth, renewal, and detoxification, much like the essence of spring. Emotionally, itâs connected to anger and ambition – both of which can âstirâ more in spring if energy isn’t balanced.

Giving Our Minds and Bodies a Spring Clean
Nourish with the Season
Spring is the perfect time to lighten up our meals, not through restriction, but through nourishment. This season brings a welcome change to our winter eating habits â you might feel like lighter meals with fresh greens and salads.
Try incorporating seasonal produce such as:
- Asparagus: Rich in folate and gentle on our digestive system.
- Watercress and rocket: these peppery greens support liver function.
- Radishes, artichokes, fresh herbs: Bright flavours that awaken the palate.
Be mindful of what you give your attention to and listen to your body – you donât need a juice cleanse or extreme detox. Your body is wise. Support your liver with real food, plenty of hydration, and movement, and it will take care of the rest.
Emotional Spring Cleaning
Spring invites not only a physical reset but also an emotional one. This is the time to reflect on where youâve been throughout the winter, especially if it brought stress, a low mood, or fatigue and consider how you want to move forward in the year.
Ask yourself:
- What habits, thoughts or unwanted emotions am I ready to let go of?
- How do I want to feel as the season unfolds?
Here are some ideas of how to do this:
- Journal a few mornings a week, asking âWhat am I ready to release?â
- Reconnect with nature to enhance movement and lift your mood.
- Gently revisit health goals without guilt or pressure.
Reawaken Your Energy
If youâve come out of winter feeling tired or uninspired, youâre not alone. Many women in midlife experience fluctuations in energy, especially at this time of year.
To support a natural energy boost:
- Start your day with sunlight! Get outside, even if just for 10 minutes.
- Reintroduce light movement into your day, like walking, stretching, or yoga.
- Embrace moments of joy and creativity – laughter, music, dance, play, art, whatever it is that makes you feel good.Â
This Season, Begin Again Gently
Spring is not about perfection or getting your body into shape for the summer; itâs about possibility. The body responds beautifully to rhythm, aligns with the season, and you may feel your energy shift more naturally. Spring doesnât ask us to jump back into non-stop action or transform overnight. It invites us to wake up slowly and to trust that change can be both graceful and powerful.
Whether youâre looking to improve your digestion, reset your habits, increase energy or reconnect with your purpose, this is the season to do so.
Embrace this time of year to spring into health, not through harsh resets, but through mindful, intentional shifts that honour where you are now.
