How to Stay Motivated on Your Wellness Journey: Some things I’ve learnt over the years

I love the Olympics – I was glued to the screen for the last two weeks and always come away feeling inspired by the personal stories, the overcoming of obstacles and the fitness and mindset of the athletes.

I know I’m not alone – many feel inspired to make improvements after such an event, and that’s great. The challenge though, is sticking to it over time. I’m not a fan of throwing oneself into any big lifestyle change – you might feel inspired and motivated at first only to find you slip back into old habits.

Embarking on any wellness or fitness journey is an exciting and transformative experience, but what’s going to keep you motivated over the long term? Whether your goals include improving your diet, increasing physical activity, managing stress, or enhancing overall well-being, maintaining motivation is key to achieving lasting success. In this post, I’m going to share some practical tips and tricks that have worked for me, so you can continue making progress and enjoy the benefits of a healthier, happier life.

Set Clear, Realistic Goals

The foundation of any successful wellness journey is setting clear and realistic goals. Without a defined objective, it’s easy to lose direction and motivation. Ensure those goals are congruent with your lifestyle and budget.

I’m sure you’ve all heard of SMART Goals. This is when you make sure your goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART). For example, instead of setting a vague goal like ‘get fit’, try ‘walk 10,000 steps daily for the next three months.’

How to Stay Motivated on Your Wellness Journey: SMART Goals

Setting Short-Term and Long-Term Goals

Focussing only on the long-term goal can leave you feeling as though you have a long way to go. Instead, break down long-term goals into smaller, short-term milestones.

Achieving these smaller goals will give you a sense of accomplishment and keep you motivated as you progress. Comparing where you’ve come from rather than what you still have to achieve will also help you feel motivated.

The Benefits of a Routine

A well-structured routine (with a little flexibility) can help turn healthy behaviours into habits, making it easier to stick with your wellness journey even on tough days.

Try to incorporate wellness activities, like exercise or meal prep, into your daily routine at the same time each day. Consistency helps build habits and makes it easier to stay on track.

Set aside time each week to plan meals, workouts, and self-care activities. Having a plan in place reduces the likelihood of falling back into old habits when life gets busy.

Track Your Progress

Tracking your progress is a powerful motivator because it allows you to see how far you’ve come. Write down your daily activities, meals, and how you feel. Reflecting on your progress can be encouraging and help identify patterns that either support or hinder your goals.

Celebrate Small Wins

Recognizing and celebrating small victories along the way can boost your morale and keep you motivated.

When you reach a milestone, reward yourself with something that aligns with your wellness goals. For example, treat yourself to a new workout outfit, a massage, or a healthy meal at your favourite restaurant.

Remember, wellness isn’t just about the numbers on the scale. Celebrate improvements in energy levels, mood, sleep quality, or strength—these are all important indicators of progress.

Stay Flexible and Adaptable

Life is unpredictable, and sometimes things won’t go as planned. Being flexible and adaptable allows you to stay on track even when faced with challenges.

You don’t want your wellness routine to cause you stress! If life circumstances mean you cannot do your usual exercise routine for a period, adapt it to something that will work with what you are dealing with. You may also need to adapt your routine when travelling.

If you find that a particular goal is too challenging or no longer relevant, don’t be afraid to adjust it. It’s better to modify your plan than to abandon it altogether.

Setbacks are a normal part of any journey. Instead of getting discouraged, view them as learning opportunities. Reflect on what caused the setback and how you can overcome similar challenges in the future.

Find Support and Accountability

One of the things I loved hearing in the Olympics was the support athletes had, with one stating ‘it takes a village’ when referring to how she achieved her success. Having a support system can make a significant difference in your motivation levels. You could work with a health coach or personal trainer, or consider joining a wellness group, fitness class, or online community where you can connect with like-minded individuals who share your goals.

On the days when you don’t feel like it, having a workout buddy, friend, or family member who can hold you accountable and motivate you, can make all the difference. Sharing your journey with others can provide encouragement, accountability, and a sense of community.

Focus on the Positive

Maintaining a positive mindset is crucial for staying motivated. Focus on the benefits of your wellness journey and how it’s improving your life. You might want to introduce a gratitude practice and take time each day to reflect on what you’re grateful for, especially the positive changes you’re experiencing as a result of your wellness efforts.

Visualising Success

Many elite athletes and sportspeople use visualisation to help them achieve their goals and I am a big fan! Regularly visualize yourself achieving your goals. Imagine how you’ll feel, what you’ll look like, and how your life will improve. This mental imagery can boost motivation and keep you focused.

Keep Learning and Stay Inspired

Continual learning and staying inspired by new ideas can keep your wellness journey fresh and exciting. As I’ve mentioned, events such as the Olympics inspire me. You can also read books, watch documentaries, or listen to podcasts on topics related to wellness, nutrition, and fitness. The more you learn, the more empowered you’ll feel to make informed choices.

When you immerse yourself in health and wellness the more you will feel as though you too can achieve your goals. Follow motivational figures on social media, subscribe to wellness blogs, or create a vision board that reminds you of your goals and aspirations.

Don’t Compare Your Progress to Anyone Else’s

This is key! We are all different, and your journey is yours alone. Comparing yourself with others will end up making you miserable. The only thing to compare yourself with is how far you’ve come.

How to Stay Motivated on Your Wellness Journey: A Conclusion

Staying motivated on your wellness journey is about finding what works best for you and staying committed to your goals, even when challenges arise. By setting clear objectives, creating a routine, tracking your progress, celebrating wins, and maintaining a positive mindset, you can keep the momentum going and achieve lasting success.

Remember, wellness is a lifelong journey, and every step you take brings you closer to a healthier, happier you.
