Creating a Wellness Routine for Busy People

Creating a Wellness Routine for Busy People

In my last blog, I talked about stress and how chronic or prolonged stress can lead to health problems over time.

One part of dealing with stress is incorporating wellness practices into your week. Many women I work with are professionals juggling their work with their home and family lives. So, I get it – balancing a hectic schedule while maintaining a wellness routine can sometimes seem daunting and impossible. However, with a bit of planning and prioritisation, it’s possible to integrate health practices into even the busiest of lives.

This blog post will offer practical tips for incorporating wellness practices into your daily routine, share time-saving healthy recipes, and discuss the importance of prioritising self-care.

Incorporating Wellness Practices into a Busy Schedule

Here are a few tips which have helped me and my clients improve their well-being:

Start Small and Build Gradually

Begin with small, manageable changes rather than overhauling your entire routine at once. Incorporate a few minutes of stretching or a short meditation session into your morning or evening routine. This is especially important for those of you who like to throw yourself fully into a new routine, only to find it unsustainable! You may be keen to get going, but if you stop for any reason, you will find it harder to start again! Consistency is key to forming lasting habits.

Schedule Wellness Activities

Treat wellness activities like work appointments. Block out time on your calendar for exercise, meal prep, or relaxation – you can even schedule a massage. Taking these parts of your life as seriously as you do your work will help you find the balance with ease.

Leverage apps and online resources to help create your wellness routine

Use Technology

Leverage apps and online resources to streamline your wellness practices. Fitness apps can provide quick workout routines and schedules, while meditation apps offer guided sessions that can fit into any part of your day. There are some great walking meditations you can stream that you can do in your lunch break or whilst you’re walking to and from work.

Incorporate Movement Throughout the Day

Look for opportunities to move more during your daily routine. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk during phone calls, or do a quick set of exercises during breaks or when you are waiting for the kettle to boil. Once you start to look for opportunities, you will find more and more of them.

Prioritise Sleep

Quality sleep is crucial for overall wellness. Establish a regular sleep schedule and create a calming bedtime routine to ensure you get enough rest. Aim to go to bed and arise at the same time each day; end all screens at least two hours before bed and wind down with some yoga, meditation or a bath. Your room should be dark, cool and distraction-free.

Practice Mindfulness

Incorporate mindfulness practices into your day to reduce stress and increase focus. Simple techniques like deep breathing or a brief moment of meditation can make a big difference.

Time-Saving Healthy Recipes

Eating fresh and whole foods cooked from scratch does not have to be time-consuming. Planning, shopping and prepping meals in advance can help ensure you eat healthily. Make sure you have some healthy snacks on hand if you need them.

Overnight Oats

Ingredients: Rolled oats, milk or plant-based alternatives, protein powder, chia seeds, honey, and your favourite fruits or nuts.

Preparation: Mix the oats, milk, protein powder, and chia seeds, in a jar. Top with fruits or nuts. Refrigerate overnight and enjoy a ready-to-eat breakfast in the morning.

Mason Jar Salads

Ingredients: Mixed greens, vegetables, protein (chicken, tofu, beans), grains (quinoa, brown rice), and your favourite dressing.

Preparation: Layer the ingredients in a mason jar, starting with the dressing at the bottom, followed by grains, protein, vegetables, and greens. Shake well before eating.

Sheet Pan Dinners

Ingredients: Protein (chicken, fish, tofu), assorted vegetables (broccoli, bell peppers, carrots), olive oil, and your favourite spices.

Preparation: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the protein and vegetables on a sheet pan, drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with spices. Roast for 20-30 minutes, until everything is cooked through.

The Importance of Prioritizing Self-Care

Self-care isn’t a ‘nice to have’. It’s essential to lead a healthy, productive life, fulfilling. Here are some of the benefits of taking that little extra care of yourself.

Improved Mental Health

Prioritising self-care helps reduce stress and anxiety, promoting better mental health. Taking time for activities you enjoy can improve your mood and overall well-being.

Enhanced Physical Health

Regular self-care activities, such as exercise and healthy eating, contribute to better physical health. This can lead to increased energy levels, and mood, improved immune function, and a lower risk of chronic diseases.

More Productive

When you take care of your health, you are better equipped to handle the demands of a busy schedule. Self-care can enhance focus, creativity, and productivity, making you more effective in your daily tasks.

Connected Relationships

Investing in your well-being can improve your relationships. When you are well-rested and less stressed, you are more patient, empathetic, and better able to connect with others.

Creating a Wellness Routine: Conclusion

So next time you are overwhelmed, stressed and just so busy you cannot stop – have a re-read of this blog. The irony is, if you stop, take some time for yourself, calm your nervous system and get adequate rest – you’ll get more done in half the time, leaving you free to take care of yourself. You see – it’s a win-win!

Creating a wellness routine is not about doing it around a busy lifestyle, it’s about bringing in the balance and trusting that both are achievable. With a little planning and a commitment to self-care, even the busiest of women can do this.

By incorporating small wellness practices, preparing time-saving healthy meals, and prioritising self-care, you can enhance your overall health and well-being now and look forward to thriving in the future. Remember, the key is consistency and making wellness a non-negotiable part of your daily routine
