When it comes to health, we can’t say we didn’t know. If anything, we are swamped with health and fitness advice coming from every platform; Instagram, YouTube, blogs, podcasts – we know we should be eating at the very least 5 different fruits and vegetables a day, drinking plenty of water, spending time in nature, cooking from scratch, exercising and moving regularly, practising mindfulness – the information available is endless.
As a health coach, my algorithms know what to deliver to me. I have only to open Instagram and I’ll be bombarded with endless tips about what to eat, how to fast, which supplements to take, and how to exercise.
And that’s the problem.
Most people I speak with already know a lot about nutrition. They’ve read the articles, listened to podcasts, and maybe even tried a few diets or programmes. The problem isn’t information. The problem is action and consistency – turning that information into real, sustainable change.
How Nutrition Coaching Turns Information into Action
This is where the difference between information and coaching becomes clear.
Information tells you what to do. Coaching helps you figure out how to do it and fit it into your life, with your circumstances, your challenges, and your patterns. And it holds you accountable to ensure you do it.
Think about it: how many times have you said, “I know I should eat more vegetables” or “I know I need to move more”? Yet knowing hasn’t always translated into doing. The gap between knowledge and action is where most people get stuck. And I get it, sometimes too much information can leave us frozen, unable to choose, or the task at hand seems too big, it’s then easier not to bother.
Why? Because information doesn’t address the obstacles that come up in real life. It doesn’t understand that you come home tired after work, that you have a family to feed, that you reach for food when you’re stressed, or that you’ve tried and failed so many times you don’t believe you can succeed anymore. Information can’t challenge your all-or-nothing thinking or help you see why you sabotage yourself every time.
Coaching can.
How Nutrition Coaching Helps You Reach Your Goals
Finding the right nutrition coach who can support you is key. Like the health world, the coaching world is full of professionals with different approaches.
Choosing a health & nutrition coach is about more than finding someone who knows about nutrition or fitness; it’s about finding someone you can relate to, who is qualified, insured, and working within a safe scope of practice. A good coach doesn’t just hand out generic plans, fad diets or simply tell you what to eat; they assess your needs, listen to your story, and guide you with evidence-based strategies that fit your lifestyle. They provide accountability, encouragement, and structured support to help you turn knowledge into action, while avoiding the quick-fix promises. Coaching moves you beyond information overload and into consistent, practical progress, helping you not only understand what to do, but actually do it in a way that lasts.
It’s a two-way relationship; a good coach listens and can help you uncover the hidden beliefs and habits that keep you from following through and achieving your health or weight goals. It’s about building accountability, so you don’t fall back into old patterns when life gets busy. They are your cheerleader, walking beside you, reminding you that you’re not alone and that change is possible.
Don’t get me wrong, knowledge is valuable and it’s a great start, but without guidance, it often just adds to the noise. That’s why so many people feel overwhelmed by health advice yet stay stuck in the same place. Health coaching takes the knowledge you already have and helps you apply it in a way that actually works for you. It’s about creating a personalised plan, supporting you through the challenges, and celebrating your progress along the way.
The truth is, knowing what to do is only the first step. Real transformation comes when you have support, accountability, and the right tools to put that knowledge into practice. That’s the power of coaching.
