One thing that always surprises me about traditional medicine is the focus on cure alone and not what we can do to prevent disease.
Let’s face it – as humans, although adaptable, we’re not living in alignment with our true needs. Processed foods, GM foods, pesticides, environmental toxins, pollution, minimal exposure to daylight and an increasingly static lifestyle are all working against what our bodies need for optimal health.
What Can You Do to Prevent Disease?
Building resilience to disease through nutrition is a powerful strategy for protecting your body against chronic illnesses. However, in the world of health and wellness, there’s often a misconception that if you eat well, exercise, and live a healthy lifestyle, you’ll never get sick. This is not true and not something I would ever make claims about.
Diseases like cancer, heart disease, and autoimmune conditions are complex and influenced by many factors, including genetics, environment, and stress.
How Nutrition Helps to Prevent Disease
What nutrition can do, however, is make your body stronger, more resilient, and better equipped to handle challenges. Whether it’s fighting off infections, managing chronic conditions, or recovering from medical treatments, a well-nourished body has a better chance of coping. I believe prevention isn’t about eliminating risk, it’s about reducing risk and improving your body’s ability to respond.

The food we eat plays a critical role in reducing chronic inflammation, supporting immune function, strengthening organs that detoxify and process toxins, balancing blood sugar, and supporting cardiovascular health. Long-term inflammation is linked to diseases like obesity, diabetes, and even cancer, and consuming anti-inflammatory foods such as fatty fish, berries, broccoli, ginger and turmeric can help regulate the body’s immune response.
Nutrients like vitamin C, zinc, and selenium help the immune system function optimally, making the body more resilient against infections. The liver, kidneys, and digestive system work hard to remove waste and toxins, and a diet rich in fibre, antioxidants, and hydration supports these processes.
Genetics and Nutrition
When it comes to having a genetic predisposition to certain diseases you can influence how the genes express themselves. A strong, well-nourished body can handle stressors more effectively, meaning that even if you have a genetic predisposition, your lifestyle choices may help determine whether those genes are activated or not.
There are genetic tests which can help assess cancer risk, such as those for cancer gene mutations. I had genetic testing done at the Royal Marsden and found that I don’t carry any cancer-related gene mutations. Of course, this doesn’t mean I’m immune to cancer, but it does provide important information about what to monitor.
If you have a family history of cancer, knowing your genetic risk can help guide early screenings and preventive measures.
Nutrition is Not a Cure for Disease
Eating well doesn’t mean you’ll never get sick. It means that if you do face illness, your body will be in a better position to fight back. Take cancer, for example. If someone is diagnosed with cancer, their ability to tolerate treatments like chemotherapy depends on the strength of their vital organs. A strong liver, kidneys, and immune system can help process medications and recover more efficiently than a weakened body.
Similarly, someone who gets the flu or a virus may bounce back quicker if their immune system is already well-supported. This is what prevention is about. It’s not making false promises but giving your body the best chance to thrive.
Nutrition to Strengthen Your Body Against Disease
The first step is prioritizing fresh, whole, nutrient-dense foods. Including a variety of colourful vegetables and fruits ensures you are getting a wide range of antioxidants and essential nutrients. Choosing lean proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates helps maintain energy and metabolic health while limiting processed foods, added sugars, and artificial ingredients supports overall wellness.
Supporting gut health is another crucial factor, as the gut microbiome plays a significant role in immunity. Consuming fermented foods like yoghurt, kefir, and sauerkraut, along with prebiotic fibres such as onions, garlic, and bananas, helps maintain a healthy gut.
Maintaining balanced blood sugar levels is also essential for overall health. Avoiding excessive sugar and refined carbs while focusing on protein and fibre-rich meals keeps blood sugar stable and prevents metabolic imbalances.
Staying Hydrated
Hydration and detoxification are often overlooked yet play a significant role in disease prevention. Drinking plenty of water supports kidney function and detoxification while reducing alcohol and excessive caffeine intake helps ease the burden on the liver.
Managing Stress
Chronic stress is a major contributor to inflammation and weakened immunity, so managing stress through practices such as mindfulness, exercise, and deep breathing techniques can help build resilience to disease.
Exercise for Health
Exercise is not just about looking good. Regular movement is a key component of long-term health. Exercise boosts circulation, supports metabolic health, and reduces disease risk.
Strength training is especially beneficial for maintaining muscle and metabolic function as we age, but any form of regular movement, including walking, swimming, or yoga, contributes to overall well-being.
Prioritizing Sleep
This is essential. Poor sleep contributes to inflammation and weakens the immune system, so practising good sleep hygiene and aiming for deep, restorative sleep allows the body to repair and regenerate.
Prevention is About Playing the Long Game With Your Health
Eating the right foods, staying hydrated, exercising, managing stress and sleeping well doesn’t mean you’ll never face illness- it means you’re investing in a body that can better build resilience to disease and handle whatever challenges come your way.
Rather than fearing disease, think of nutrition as a tool to empower yourself, build resilience, support longevity, and give your body the strength it needs to function at its best. Because when it comes to health, every choice you make today contributes to your future well-being.
