Beetroot, Chia and Strawberry Jam Recipe

Since January is all about detox and weight loss, I thought I’d make a healthy jam recipe with beetroots. I normally put them in my salads, but I found this is a more delicious way of eating them.

Beetroots are extremely healthy, bursting with antioxidants. Beetroots purify the blood, improve liver function, aid digestion and reduce constipation.

Chia seeds are rich in fibre, protein, and omega-3 fatty acids; they are also essential for thickening the jam.

This is a very simple, healthy recipe that kids can enjoy too.

Beetroot Jam Ingredients

To make this beetroot jam, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 2 cooked beetroots
  • 1 punnet of strawberries (remove the tops before mashing)
  • 2 tablespoons of chia seeds
  • 3/4 cup of water
  • Xylitol to sweeten (how much you use depends on how sweet you like it. I personally don’t use any sweetener)

How to make Beetroot Jam

  1. Mash the beetroot
  2. Mash the strawberries – taking care to remove the tops first
  3. Place all the ingredients in a saucepan and boil for one minute.
  4. Pour your jam into hot, sterilised glass jars.

It’s very important to sterilise jars to prevent bacteria and mould from forming, and it also prolongs shelf life.

Another important point to note is that you must never place hot food into cold jars, as they can crack, so make sure you time it so the jam and jars are ready at the same time.

How to Sterilise Jam Jars

  1. Start by washing the jars and lids you wish to use with hot soapy water and leave them to dry upside down on a tea towel.
  2. Once dry, place the jars upright on a metal tray, making sure the jars do not touch each other.
  3. Place them in a preheated oven at 180 °C for 10 minutes.
  4. Place the lids in a saucepan of water and boil them for 10 minutes.

Once the jars and lids are ready, take them out and pour the hot jam inside.
