You’ve Been Good All Year Don’t Let One Holiday Throw You Off

Last week I wrote about the ‘Monday Mindset’, how we tend to see one binge, one missed exercise day or an indulgent night out as a failure, and give up, planning to start again on ‘Monday’.

Well, this week I want to talk about holidays, and again, how we can see a little ‘downtime’ and indulgence as a setback.

I’ve worked with many women who set yearly health goals. As the weather warms up, the incentive to get healthy and fit for the summer holidays naturally increases. It’s not always about getting the perfect body; often it’s about feeling energised and happy in one’s skin. They’ve worked hard, been consistent, eaten well, exercised regularly, prioritised their health, and built routines that support their energy, mood, and confidence.

And now… It’s time for that holiday.

It could be a girls’ trip, a summer escape with a partner, a much-needed break with the family, or all the above! The excitement builds, yet so does the anxiety.

It’s common to think:

What if I undo all my progress? What if I eat too much, drink too much, and stop moving? Will I fall off track completely? What happens after the holiday – what will keep me going? Will I find the motivation to get back to my routine?

If that’s you, know you’re not alone!

I see this fear all the time, and if you’re nodding along, I want to remind you of something really important:

One holiday isn’t going to undo everything you’ve built. Or two holidays come to that.

Your body, your health, and your habits are far more resilient than you think. You’ve put in the effort, day by day, week by week, and that foundation doesn’t just disappear overnight because you let loose for a few days or weeks. In fact, taking a proper break can do wonders for your long-term motivation and well-being.

You’re allowed to enjoy your life

I’m here to tell you – pleasure is part of a healthy life. It’s not something to be earned or punished. It’s a part of being human. Holidays are a time to connect, unwind, and yes, indulge a little. There is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying a beautiful dinner, saying yes to dessert, sipping a cocktail or two by the beach, or having that extra scoop of gelato.

You don’t have to ‘earn’ your treats, ‘make up for them’ later, or spend energy explaining to yourself why you deserve them. You’re on holiday, so let yourself be in the moment.

Let’s reframe this narrative: Being the healthiest version of ourselves isn’t about being perfect all the time. It’s about being present.

Keeping it simple

If you’re worried about staying balanced while on holiday, there are a few simple things you can do. Firstly, don’t overload yourself with strict food rules or rigid routines. That kind of mindset only creates pressure, guilt and feelings of failure – and believe me, those around you will feel it too!

Instead, just focus on a few simple actions:

  1. Hydration is key. If all you do is make sure you’re drinking enough water, that’s already a win. It supports your digestion, energy, and mood, especially if you’re in the sun or having the occasional drink.
  2. Move your body daily. A long walk, a swim, dancing with friends, stretching in your room, it all counts. Movement doesn’t have to be a ‘workout’ to be effective. You don’t have to run every day or hit the hotel gym.
  3. Add protein and veg when you can. It doesn’t have to be every meal. But these small anchors help keep your blood sugar stable and your body feeling nourished. If you’re at an all-inclusive accommodation, load up with fresh veg and salads alongside your choice of protein.
  4. Prioritise rest. Late nights happen; simply listen to your body and get quality sleep where you can. Rest is underrated, and it’s one of the biggest keys to feeling good on holiday.

And that’s it!

Seriously – let go of the weighing, tracking, consuming those super-food powders. Let go of the guilt and focus on gentle awareness and self-kindness.

Two weeks of joy won’t undo a year of progress

I’ll let you into a little secret – the way you speak to yourself during those two weeks matters so much more than all the above!

If you spend your holiday stuck in guilt, self-criticism, or fear of ‘losing control,’ you rob yourself of the joy and relaxation you deeply deserve. This isn’t about ‘getting away with it’. This is about trusting and knowing that your body, your health, and your habits can bend without breaking.

Your nervous system, your metabolism, and your emotional well-being are all just as important to your overall health and will benefit when you let yourself feel safe in the choices you’re making. When you return, you’ll pick things back up. You’ll feel refreshed, maybe even re-inspired. Why? Because you’ll know that you can live a full life without swinging between extremes.

This is what sustainable health and balance look and feel like.

So, fully enjoy your holiday – laugh loudly, eat slowly, rest deeply, dance barefoot. And nourish your body and your soul.

You’ve earned this.
