True Wellness: Beyond Weight Loss Medication for Lasting Health

Why True Wellness Is About More Than Just Medication

Let’s talk about weight loss medications. You’d have to be living under a rock to have not heard about these drugs, particularly Ozempic, which is getting a lot of attention mainly due to the seemingly overnight weight loss transformations of many high-profile celebrities. Yet these drugs have also entered conversations as a potential solution for the rising rates of obesity in our country.

So, is this the magical drug we’ve all been looking for? While in some more extreme cases, medication can help individuals lose excessive weight, it’s important to remember that with medications such as these, there are risks. Yes, they may work in the short term, yet weight, health, and well-being are far more complex than a single prescription can address—and that’s what I want to talk about in this blog.

Reversing Years of Conditioning

You see, health and weight gain are never one-dimensional. Our choices and behavioural patterns are set down in childhood. We’re all results of our upbringings and what happens to us – our experiences, education, parenting, what was modelled, societal norms, our environments, etc. Given the complexity of our make-up, lasting change requires more than simply symptom management. It requires healing at the root.

As a Nutritional Therapist and Health Coach, this is at the heart of what I do. I work with individuals to look beyond surface-level solutions, helping them reconnect with their bodies, their relationship with food, and their emotional well-being. True health is not about quick fixes or temporary results, it’s about building sustainable habits, understanding the deeper reasons behind eating patterns, and creating a foundation of care that supports the whole person.

This is why, for many, weight challenges are not simply about what they eat or a lack of willpower. They are entwined with emotional eating, stress, trauma, cultural conditioning, lifestyle patterns, and in some cases, a lack of accessible education around nutrition and wellbeing. When we view health only through the lens of weight, or weight only through the lens of medication, we miss the deeper conversation, so we never get to the root of the problem.

What Weight Loss Medication Doesn’t Do

When we simply prescribe for weight loss, what we miss is:

  • The opportunity to teach people how to build a nourishing, respectful relationship with food.
  • The chance to support emotional resilience and mental health alongside physical wellbeing.
  • The chance to encourage movement, not as punishment, but as a joyful expression of life.
  • The opportunity to create environments where real, whole food is accessible and affordable.
  • And we lose the chance to help children and adults alike learn the foundations of balanced, sustainable health from an early age.

Medication may offer a tool for some, and when weight becomes life-threatening, then yes, it’s useful – but it cannot replace the work of education, empowerment, and emotional healing. There are risks associated with long-term use of these medications, so what happens when someone stops taking them? If the root cause of unwanted weight gain and emotional eating is not addressed, then many will find themselves back where they started

True Wellness: Healing and Education for Good Health

Healing and Education for Good Health

If we heal and educate people to change habits and behaviours, we move towards prevention, which is when true change happens. Physically and mentally healthy, educated, informed adults make better choices for their babies and children, who grow up to be healthy adults and so on.

What does this look like?

Our health starts in childhood, in the habits and beliefs that are woven quietly into daily life by our caregivers. We can teach children and young people about food not through shame or fear, but through celebration and connection. It’s about encouraging families to create environments where meals are about nourishment and togetherness, not stress or restriction. It’s also about opening conversations about emotions, coping strategies, self-worth, and resilience.

When these foundations are strong, medication becomes less of a desperate need and more of an optional support where truly necessary. When these foundations are missing, medication alone cannot fill the gap.

There is no shame in seeking help or in using medication if it feels right for an individual under proper medical care. But it is equally important that we honour the complexity of health and acknowledge that weight and wellbeing are influenced by more than biology alone.

Emotional well-being matters as much as our physical health – one impacts the other. Our relationship with food matters, as does our community, stress levels, trauma, education, and environment. To create lasting change, we must look beyond quick fixes, whether that be weight loss drugs or other restrictive diets, and open ourselves to the deeper, sometimes slower work of true healing.

This is not about choosing between medication and lifestyle. It’s about remembering that health is never built by one action alone. It is an ongoing, evolving relationship between mind, body, and soul, and it deserves to be treated with that same depth, care, and respect.

Where to Begin: A Gentle Path Forward

If you’re beginning to realise that your relationship with food, your body, and health is asking for something deeper than a quick solution, know that you’re not alone. Healing is possible, and it begins with small, compassionate steps.

You might start by simply listening more closely to your body’s signals. Notice when you are hungry or tired – what do you do? Notice your emotions and actions without judgment. You might begin to explore emotional support through journaling, therapy, or working with a health coach who understands the emotional roots of eating behaviours. You might start by letting go of the need to “fix” yourself and instead focusing on caring for yourself.

Sometimes the first step is simply hearing a different kind of message, one that reminds you that you were never broken, only in need of deeper care. True healing begins the moment you choose to honour yourself with kindness.
