I am going to be honest with you – when you embark upon your health journey, whether that’s reaching an ideal weight, building muscle, improving stamina or focusing on healing and well-being – there will be challenges and plateaus along the way. Hitting any plateau on your health journey can frustrate and demotivate you, it’s when a lot of people give up and yet it’s common to reach a point where progress stalls or slows down.
However, it’s important to recognise that plateaus are not permanent roadblocks. They are part of the journey and with the right strategies and mindset, you can overcome these challenges and continue moving forward towards your health goals.
In this post, we’ll explore common reasons for plateaus and share actionable tips to help you break through them while on your health journey.
Understanding Plateaus
Plateaus occur when your body adapts to your current routine and stops responding to your efforts. This can happen for various reasons, including metabolic adaptation – when our metabolism slows down because of the decrease in calories, lack of variety in your workouts, or hitting a psychological barrier such as stress.
The first step in moving through any plateau is to recognise that they are a natural part of the journey. This can help you approach them with a positive mindset, and factor them into your growth.
Here are some of the Common Challenges:
1. Lack of Progress
You’ve been following your health plan diligently, but you’ve stopped losing weight, or you’re not seeing improvements in your fitness level or are feeling less tired after a workout.
2. Boredom or Lack of Motivation
Your workouts feel monotonous, and you’re struggling to stay motivated or stick to your routine.
3. Plateau in Strength or Endurance
You’ve reached a plateau in your strength training or cardio workouts, maybe they feel too easy and you’re not making gains like you used to.
4. Emotional Eating or Stress
Stressful situations or emotional triggers are causing you to turn to food for comfort, derailing your progress.
5. Unrealistic Expectations
You may have set unrealistic goals or timelines, leading to feelings of disappointment or frustration when progress slows down.
Strategies to Break Through Plateaus
Thankfully there are things you can do to overcome a plateau. The first thing is to factor them into your journey and see them as an opportunity to adjust and reassess your approach to your health goals.
1. Reassess Your Goals
is it time to up your steps, increase the length of your workout or adjust those weights? Or maybe you expected too much too soon? Take a step back and review your goals, it may be time to set new ones which keep you focused on making progress.
2. Mix Up Your Routine
Combat boredom and introduce variety into your workouts by trying new exercises, changing the intensity or duration of your workouts, or incorporating different types of physical activity into your routines – for instance, yoga or hiking.
3. Take a break
If you’ve been going to the gym every morning then stepping away from your regular workout will give your body a chance to rejuvenate, yet that doesn’t mean doing nothing. Try something different for a while, like dance lessons, a group workout session, or climbing for example. Not only does this provide respite for your mind, but it also introduces your muscles to new challenges.
4. Focus on Nutrition
It’s always important to evaluate your eating habits and make any necessary adjustments to ensure you’re fuelling your body properly with enough protein and nutrients. If this does not change anything then consider consulting with a registered dietitian or nutritionist for personalized guidance as it could be your body is reacting to certain foods.
5. Manage Stress
Identify the cause of stress, and if you can remove it, do so. Also, it’s important to implement stress management techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or deep breathing exercises to reduce stress levels and prevent emotional eating.
Track Your Progress
Keep track of your workouts, meals, and progress to monitor your journey objectively. That way you can tell what’s working and what isn’t. Perhaps you need to up your workout and cut out certain foods.
By tracking what you are doing you can make adjustments accordingly. It’s also important to celebrate small victories along the way to stay motivated.
Seek Support
Don’t hesitate to reach out to a health coach, personal trainer, or supportive community for guidance and encouragement. Having a support system can make all the difference in staying accountable and motivated during challenging times.
Plateaus are a natural part of your health journey, but they don’t have to derail your progress.
By understanding the common challenges and implementing effective strategies, you can break through plateaus and continue making strides towards your health goals.
