As women, we’re used to changes over the years. As we journey through life, each decade brings its own set of new experiences, challenges and triumphs. It begins in puberty as we navigate becoming a woman. As we grow and enter our 20s and 30s, we navigate and juggle the workplace, relationships, marriage, childbirth, parenting and society’s expectations of us. Not so many years ago, by 40 our children were grown or it was seen as too late to start – now we see women having children into their mid-40s or choosing to not have them at all.
Whatever your choices, or wherever you are on your journey, turning 40 marks a significant milestone in a woman’s life, with many experiencing this period as a time of reflection, growth, and newfound confidence. We hear women speak about spending decades behaving in a way society, specifically a patriarchal society, expects a woman to behave. Then as we enter our 40s, something changes. We start to look towards midlife. With perimenopause and menopause on the horizon and the hormonal changes that entail, we begin to question where we are and what we want for the rest of our lives.
It’s an opportunity to shed old insecurities and embrace the beauty of ageing gracefully, celebrating the wisdom and experiences that have shaped us into the resilient individuals we are today. Many women reinvent their lives at this time, perhaps changing careers, initiating divorce or transforming their health.
Embracing confidence at 40: A personal journey and empowering others
For me, entering my 40s was a transformative experience. I found myself shedding the need for external validation and instead, focussed on nurturing my inner strength and confidence. With each passing year, I became more comfortable in my own skin, embracing my flaws and imperfections as part of what makes me unique.
Driven by my own journey towards self-acceptance, and seeing the changes in friends and clients, I made it my mission to empower women over 40 to reclaim their confidence and vitality. Through my one-to-one coaching, I’ve witnessed first-hand the transformative power of embracing change and stepping into one’s full potential.

Embracing body image and self-confidence
One of the key psychological aspects of ageing that we often grapple with is body image. Sadly our society is still obsessed with youth and its standards of beauty may try to dictate how we should look or what constitutes ageing gracefully. However, true beauty radiates from within—confidence, self-love, health and a positive mindset are the foundations of a vibrant and fulfilling life.
I am overjoyed when I see those in the spotlight unapologetically being themselves and refusing to play the game of trying to stay youthful. Take Sarah Jessica Parker and Jaime Lee-Curtis for example, women who have been criticized for ‘ageing naturally’ yet have refused to back down. And look at how much praise Pamela Anderson recently received for turning up to an event with no make-up – these women exude self-confidence and are celebrating midlife.
Resilience in the face of challenges
Life doesn’t stop at 40; in fact, it’s just the beginning of a new chapter filled with possibilities. If the average life span for a woman in the UK is 80 – we are only halfway through!! Maybe that’s why it’s such a pivotal age, after spending decades adhering to society’s expectations of us, we get to choose how we spend the next half of our lives! Women in their 40s and beyond show immense resilience, navigating career changes, family dynamics, menopause and personal growth with grace and determination.
We really do get to say how our 40s, and 50s and onwards will be for us. You can choose to see every challenge as an opportunity for growth, and every setback a lesson in resilience.
I’m inspired daily by the stories of women who have embraced their age and thrived. Women in their 40’s start families, new businesses, embark on solo adventures, and transform their health. Each journey is a testament to the strength and resilience that comes with age. These stories remind us that life is meant to be lived to the fullest, regardless of age or societal expectations.
Looking after your health at 40
It’s inevitable that as we get older, we’re going to face challenges – that’s part of life. Yet it doesn’t all have to be downhill from here! See your 40s as a time to really focus on and take care of yourself. You may find that after years of eating whatever you want, you begin to put on weight, or you may not be able to handle alcohol or late nights like you used to. Some women find certain foods don’t agree with them anymore, or their exercise routine needs to change – what worked once, may not work now. It’s time to re-evaluate your lifestyle and prepare for the changes ahead.
With half of your life ahead of you, a healthy, resilient mind and body will help you live a full and vibrant life with energy.
