Being an Italian living in the UK, with close family in Italy, Germany, and New Zealand, I often find myself travelling between these countries. However, as I became more conscious about my health and wellness, maintaining my routine in different locations became challenging.
Many of my clients travel – for business and pleasure and in today’s fast-paced, highly connected world, maintaining a healthy routine can be challenging, especially when you find yourself in different environments.
Whether at home or travelling, it’s crucial to adapt and maintain a routine that supports your well-being. This blog post explores the importance of having a healthy routine, the flexibility required to adapt to different settings, and practical tips to get started without feeling overwhelmed.
The Importance of a Healthy Routine
A healthy routine brings structure and balance to our lives. It helps manage stress and enhances our overall well-being. Consistent routines can lead to better sleep, improved mental health, and increased productivity. They anchor our days, providing a sense of stability amidst the bustle and unpredictability of life.
However, you don’t want to get stressed about not being able to maintain your routine when travelling or away from home.
Adapting Routines to Different Environments
The biggest lesson I learnt was, that while routines are essential, they need to be flexible enough to adapt to various environments. Here are some key points to consider:
Your Home Routine
At home, you have the luxury of familiar surroundings and resources. This might include a more comprehensive routine involving exercise, cooking healthy meals, and dedicated time for hobbies and wellness activities.
Your Travel Routine
Depending on where you’re travelling and the purpose, resources and time can be limited. Your schedule may be dictated by work or others so it’s good to simplify your health and wellness routine. Focus on small, manageable activities that can be done anywhere, like a short meditation, a walk, or a quick journaling session.
If your daily run is not possible, yet you have access to a pool or a gym then great, you can incorporate time for those activities into your day instead.
In terms of sticking to your diet, be sure to pack some supplements and superfoods which can easily be prepared wherever you are.
Keeping your healthy routine realistic
When travelling, one common mistake I made was trying to do too much. It’s important to remember that a routine doesn’t have to be elaborate. It can be as simple as a15 15-minute workout in your hotel room, a brief yet brisk walk, a 3-minute meditation or a 5-minute journal entry. The key is consistency and choosing activities you enjoy and can realistically carry out where you are.
Practical Tips to Consider When Maintaining Your Healthy Routine
1. Be consistent
Do what you can, no matter how brief it may be. Just a few minutes of your wellness or exercise routine is better than nothing. This could be a short meditation, a brief walk, some yoga or writing in a journal.
Don’t be tempted to ditch your healthy eating because ‘you’re on holiday’, equally so, don’t get stressed if you don’t have access to your normal way of eating. Be flexible, choose salads and fresh foods where possible and allow yourself the odd treat.
2. Prioritise
Identify what activity you need to do at the moment you have which will make you feel the best and focus on that. This ensures that your routine remains enjoyable and sustainable.
3. Be Flexible
Life is unpredictable and your time is not always your own when travelling. If you miss part of your routine, don’t stress. Adapt and find another time during the day to complete it or adjust your expectations for the day.

4. Utilise Technology
Numerous apps can help you maintain your routine when travelling, such as meditation guides, fitness trackers, and journaling apps. Utilise what’s available – YouTube is great for yoga tutorials and HIT workouts you can do anywhere.
5. Stay Inspired, Not Overwhelmed
Social media can be a source of inspiration but can also lead to unrealistic expectations. Follow accounts that offer practical, realistic advice and routines that resonate with your lifestyle.
Healthy Routine Ideas for Home and Away
You may have developed your home routine and it works perfectly – so what happens when you are away from home? It might not be possible to get up at 6am and have a 30-minute run, or it may be a challenge to find a quiet space for some meditation – the key here is adaptability.
This is an example you can use...
Home Routine
Morning: 10-minute meditation, 20-minute exercise, healthy breakfast.
Afternoon: Break for a short walk, healthy lunch, 15 minutes of reading.
Evening: Light stretching, 10 minutes of journaling, unwinding with a hobby.
Travel Routine
Morning: 3-minute meditation, healthy breakfast.
Afternoon: Explore your surroundings by walking, a light snack.
Evening: Quick stretch session, jot down thoughts in a travel journal, enjoy a local activity or hobby.
Maintaining a healthy routine: Conclusion
Maintaining a healthy routine, whether at home or travelling, is about finding balance and being realistic with your expectations. Small, consistent practices can make a significant difference to your overall well-being. Adapt your routine to fit your environment, no matter how small, and remember to keep it enjoyable.
With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to sustaining a healthy lifestyle no matter where you are in the world. Be curious and adventurous – exercise and wellness can come in many forms!
By following these guidelines, you can create a sustainable and adaptable routine that promotes well-being and reduces stress. The key is to keep it simple, realistic, and flexible, ensuring that it enhances your life rather than becoming a source of stress.
