I always believe how we look after ourselves reflects how we look after our environment. For me, the body and environment are intertwined – yet so many of us don’t consider this. There is no point in striving for good health when we’re surrounded by toxins and pollutants. Likewise, the products and lifestyle choices we make have a bearing on our environment.
Sustainable living is an inside-out job, the choices we make affect our health and environment. It’s not just about me or you, it’s about creating a healthier life for humanity and future generations. In this post, we’ll explore how you can enhance your wellness and look after the environment by embracing sustainable living habits.
Understanding the Connection
The link between environmental health and personal wellness is undeniable. Polluted air, contaminated water, and toxic chemicals found in everything from food to beauty and household products can contribute to a wide range of health issues, from respiratory problems to chronic diseases like cancer. By taking steps to minimise our environmental impact, we not only contribute to the earth’s well-being but also improve our own health.
This subject is diverse in its nature, so I will only touch on it here – if it’s something that interests you, I would encourage you to do your own research.
As you all know, I am a big advocate for eating a healthy, balanced diet made from scratch using fresh ingredients. Just this alone is more sustainable than purchasing ready-made and processed food which is factory-made and packaged, not to mention it has zero nutritional value.
Here are some of the other steps I take towards sustainable living which also benefit my health.
1. Choose organic, seasonal and locally-sourced foods
One of the simplest ways to live sustainably is to choose organic and locally-sourced foods which are in season. You can get these at health food shops and farmers markets or, if you live in the countryside, often you can buy from local farms.
Benefits for the environment
Buying organically grown or reared food reduces the use of harmful pesticides, fertilizers and hormones and cuts down on carbon emissions associated with long transportation routes.
Benefits for your health
Local, seasonal and organic foods are fresher and often more nutritious. The journey from farm to your table is much shorter, so they have not been kept in storage for so long. You’ll know seasonal produce is fresh therefore will retain its nutrients.

2. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Adopting the three Rs can significantly impact your environmental footprint. Reduce your consumption of single-use plastics, reuse items whenever possible, and recycle waste correctly.
By shopping consciously we become mindful about packaging and waste. Most high streets have a refill shop where you can take your own containers or fill paper bags with loose produce and fill your containers at home – therefore reducing waste further. Even major supermarkets are starting to get in on the act!
Benefits for the environment
This not only conserves resources but also reduces pollution and carbon emissions, leading to cleaner air and water.
Benefits for your health
Using reuseable drinking vessels means you won’t be getting the chemicals from plastics in your water.
3. Green Your Commute
Consider walking, biking, carpooling, or using public transport to reduce carbon emissions. If driving is unavoidable, think about investing in an electric or hybrid vehicle.
Benefits for the environment
By reducing your reliance on fossil fuels, you help decrease air pollution which is linked to several respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
Benefits for your health
by walking, biking and even getting public transport, you effortlessly increase your steps and exercise without having to make extra time for the gym, therefore improving your fitness and health.
4. Transitioning to an Eco Home
Our homes can be toxic environments! By being conscious of our choices of paint, cleaning supplies and chemicals we not only make our homes less toxic, we are not polluting our water supply.
Make your home more energy-efficient by upgrading to LED lighting, investing in energy-efficient appliances, Solar PV, and improving your home’s insulation.
Benefits to the environment
Conserving energy reduces your carbon footprint. Using natural cleaning products helps to keep our water clean.
Benefits to your health
A well-insulated and warm home with proper ventilation can lead to a healthier indoor environment by decreasing the likelihood of dampness and mould.
5. Support Sustainable Companies
We have buying power! Choose to buy from companies that prioritise sustainability in their products and operations. Do your research to make sure they really are doing what they say they are doing. Whether it’s clothing, electronics, beauty or cleaning products, supporting eco-friendly companies encourages more businesses to adopt sustainable practices.
Benefits to the environment
Sustainable products tend to have a greener production process so by shopping consciously, we send a message to companies that they have to consider the impact their manufacturing and products have. This leads to a healthier environment and ecosystems.
Benefits to your health
Sustainable products include more natural and less toxic ingredients therefore benefiting your health.
The Benefits of Sustainable Living Are Clear
As you can see, embracing sustainable living can significantly enhance your personal health too. It can lead to better air quality and water, leading to fewer allergies and respiratory problems, and overall higher life satisfaction. Moreover, sustainable habits often encourage a more active lifestyle and a closer connection to your community and nature.
Take Action
If a sustainable lifestyle is new for you, start small. Choose one or two sustainable practices to incorporate into your daily life and build from there. Remember, sustainable living isn’t about perfection, it’s about making better choices, one step at a time, for a healthier life and planet for us all.
By aligning our health goals with environmental preservation, we can move towards a world that supports not only our well-being but also that of the planet.
It’s a holistic approach to health that benefits us today and secures a healthier future for generations to come.
