Those who know me know that ‘balance’ is my favourite approach to everything. As a health and nutrition professional, I have seen different types of ‘addiction,’ and the ones associated with excessive working or overworking tend to get overlooked as they’re more socially acceptable than say binge eating or drinking too much.
In reality, being a workaholic is just as damaging to our well-being. When we put all our energy into one area of our lives, other areas get neglected and suffer.
For most of us, finding balance in our fast-paced world between work commitments, personal life, and health often seems like an elusive goal – which can be stressful to achieve.
With this article, I hope to unravel the complexities of achieving the elusive balance between work, life, and health. Providing insight and practical strategies to empower you in navigating the demands of your busy lives whilst prioritizing your overall health and well-being.

How do we know when life is unbalanced?
If you’re unsure if your life is out of balance I would start with the ‘Wheel of Life’ exercise. For those who’ve not done this, draw a circle and divide it into 8 sections like portions of a pie, then title each section with the following (you can adapt the words to suit your life):
- Work/Career
- Family & Friends
- Romance
- Health & Fitness
- Personal growth
- Social life & fun
- Finances
- Spirituality
Without giving it much thought, mark each section out of 10, with 1 being the lowest. What you want to aim for is a balanced circle, if there are much lower areas – those are the ones you want to give more attention to.
This will help you recognize that work, life, and health are interlinked, there is no separating them and disruptions in one area can affect the others.
It’s important to pay close attention to signs showing an imbalance. Watch for early burnout indicators, like persistent tiredness, signs of strain in personal relationships, such as increased conflicts, or if you are getting sick a lot. Recognizing these signs is your cue to reassess and recalibrate priorities positively.
How to rebalance your life
As you start to focus on the areas which need attention, you need to be careful not to let the other areas get out of balance. This can take some practice.
Mastering Time Management
Balancing one’s busy life is not easy, and it takes constant assessment. One way to manage this is to focus on effective time management. This can mean diarising your daily life as well as work schedules, that way you can factor in time for exercise, time with friends and family, and prioritise tasks. It’s important to set boundaries, and don’t hesitate to say ‘no.’
Check-in on your stress and mental health
Work-related stress can have a huge impact on our mental health. Check-in on your stress levels and boundaries at work. Does your workplace foster a positive approach towards good mental health? Turn off phone notifications when away from work and avoid checking your emails. If need be, speak up and explore strategies for creating a mentally supportive work environment.
Carving Out Quality Personal Time
Quality personal time is not just nice to have – it’s essential to your health and well-being. Prioritise relaxation in your week, engage in hobbies, and spend time with loved ones. These moments contribute significantly to personal fulfilment and enhanced mental and emotional well-being.
Integrating Health into Daily Routines
Prioritising our health does not have to be hard. There are many ways we can seamlessly incorporate health-conscious habits into our daily routines. I have written lots of articles on how to do this, from mindful eating to quick workouts and sufficient sleep. Small daily adjustments will contribute to long-term well-being.
Setting realistic health goals
Set achievable goals which align with your lifestyle, personal aspirations, and health objectives. Emphasize the importance of balance when goal-setting for sustained success.
Embracing Flexibility and Adaptability
It’s essential to embrace flexibility in a world of constant change. When we are too rigid, change can be stressful. Cultivate an adaptable mindset to navigate unexpected challenges without compromising overall well-being. This does not mean always going with the flow, it means pivoting or adapting accordingly to the change in circumstances.
Seeking Support and Delegating Responsibilities
We are social beings who thrive on helping and supporting each other – we are not supposed to be living life alone. Recognize the importance of seeking support and sharing responsibilities. Build a network of colleagues, friends, and family to help with managing life’s demands.
Reflection and Ongoing Adjustment
Go back to your Wheel of Life and engage in regular self-reflection to assess and reassess life balance. Ensure that priorities align with personal values and adapt to evolving circumstances. Achieving balance is an ongoing process of adjustment and realignment.
Achieving balance among work, life, and health is a nuanced journey that requires intentional choices and self-awareness. By implementing practical strategies, building a supportive environment, and embracing adaptability, you can navigate this intricate balancing act and cultivate a life that promotes both professional success and holistic well-being.
Remember, it’s not about perfection but about finding a sustainable rhythm that nurtures your mind, body, and soul.
